Since its introduction in 1991, the Subscriber Identity Module (SIM) has undergone a relentless process of physical miniaturization. It migrated from the credit-card-sized original to the Mini, then the Micro, and finally the Nano-SIM found in most contemporary handsets. Each iteration signaled a desire to reclaim internal real estate for batteries and sensors, yet the fundamental concept remained: a piece of plastic and copper that the user had to manually manipulate.
The emergence of the eSIM (embedded SIM) represents the final stage of this evolution. Rather than a removable card, the eSIM is a permanent chip soldered directly onto the device's motherboard. This shift transforms connectivity from a hardware constraint into a software service, allowing users to download profiles and switch carriers—or add secondary data plans from third-party providers—without needing a physical tool or a trip to a retail store.
While the industry has yet to set a definitive "sunset" date for the physical slot, the trajectory is clear. The current era, where physical trays and eSIMs coexist, is a transitional phase. Market projections suggest that the next decade will see the total phase-out of the SIM tray as manufacturers prioritize water resistance and structural integrity. The question is no longer whether the physical card will disappear, but when the last slot will be sealed for good.
