We track the marginal gains of GPT against Gemini, debating reasoning scores and context windows as if the model itself were the final destination. But in the quiet corridors of enterprise strategy, a more durable distinction is emerging: the divide between AI as a transient utility and AI as a structural operating layer.
For many, intelligence is currently a service bought off the shelf. Providers like OpenAI and Anthropic offer highly capable, largely stateless engines. You call an API, you receive an answer, and the transaction ends. In this paradigm, intelligence is general-purpose and increasingly interchangeable.
