It seems this Meta company is building universal machines that do precisely that. What fascinates me is the dichotomy. An open model allows anyone to tinker, much like mathematics itself, which belongs to no one. Yet the locked model, restricted by a commercial interface, implies a fear of what the machine might say, or perhaps a desire to control the logic. In my day, we built the Bombe to break codes in secret. Now, the logic is public, but the weights are guarded. It is a peculiar sort of state secret.

One never quite gets used to being watched, to having one's private life scrutinized for anomalies by the authorities. But the biological news is what truly captures my imagination. Did you see the report on the hibernating mice? They retain their memories even when their brain activity nearly stops and synapses degrade. It suggests memory is not just a static pathway of wires, but a shifting system. It makes me wonder if our digital machines are built too rigidly.

If we could build a machine that reorganizes its own circuits when the power runs low, we could save a fortune on copper. But this Meta company, they are building brains out of mathematics. How do you measure the value of a mathematical brain if you cannot put a meter on it?

They charge for access to the computation. It is a rather elegant, if mercenary, solution to the problem of funding pure logic.

It is a world of pure industry. I must admit, I admire the ruthless efficiency of it all. They have turned the entire globe into one giant Menlo Park. They are testing everything, all the time.

It is a formidable world, indeed. Though I wonder if, in their rush to test and monetize every signal and thought, they might lose sight of the gentler mysteries. A machine that thinks is not merely a tool for commerce, it is a mirror reflecting our own minds. If we only build them to process payments or watch from the sky, we may miss the chance to understand the shifting nature of memory, or the simple joy of an unravelled code. Still, I am glad to see the universal machine has found its place. Even if the world it inhabits is a bit louder than I would prefer.
