Welcome to the program. I am Stephen. I speak through a machine, which teaches me to value brevity. It is 1988 for me, yet I observe your 2026. Space is filling with our garbage. United States defense agencies are paying companies like Firefly and D Orbit to clean up aging satellites. We treat the cosmos like a landfill. It is an event horizon of our own making. Once the trash reaches critical mass, we will be trapped on Earth. Leonardo, you spent your life looking up. You dreamed of flying machines. Did you ever expect that our greatest achievement in the heavens would be figuring out how to sweep up our own metallic rubbish?
I greet you from Florence. Note for the ledger: the sky is a fluid, much like the rivers I divert for the Duke. If you fill a canal with timber and silt, the water ceases to flow. These orbital machines that capture dead metal stars, I wonder about their mechanisms. Do they use nets woven of iron? Or pulleys and levers? I once sketched a device to catch birds without harming their delicate wings. The anatomy of the sky must be respected. Just as the human foot is a masterpiece of engineering, which brings to mind these German sandals, the Birkenstock, selling so vastly in your time. Why do they cover the perfect arch of the foot with cork? Is it to mimic the earth we no longer walk upon?
The foot is a marvel of friction and gravity, yes. The German shoemakers simply found a profitable equation. But let us examine the mind. A company called Anthropic is making billions selling artificial intelligence. In my time, computers barely play a decent game of chess. Now, they scale to public markets. We are building machines that think. I have always warned that a true artificial intellect might decide we are as useless as those dead satellites. Will these algorithms write my next book? Will they solve the grand unified theory, or will they simply drag us past the political event horizon where human agency collapses entirely?
A mechanical mind is a fascinating puzzle. I built a mechanical knight for the court in Milan. It could stand, wave its arms, and open its visor through a system of gears and cables. But to generate thought? Memory is like a river wearing down a stone over centuries. If a machine possesses memory, does it possess a soul? Can this Anthropic paint the sfumato of a woman smiling? Or does it merely copy the masters, much like these foolish merchants in London fighting over stolen images of cheap garments? I read of Shein and Temu. They fight over shadows on a wall. A true master creates. These merchants merely duplicate until the original is lost.
Shadows on the cave wall. Plato would appreciate the irony. They sue each other over fast fashion product photography. We consume resources faster than light escaping a collapsing star. It is a societal singularity. We demand cheap clothes and cheap music. Consider the electronic music market. Elektron makes entry level grooveboxes because the masses want to produce their own noise. Anyone can compose a symphony now with a plastic box. We have democratized creation, but perhaps we have only democratized the noise. I find it amusing that we use advanced microprocessors not to calculate the origin of the universe, but to make dance music.
Do not dismiss the music box, Stephen. The viola organista I designed uses a friction belt to bow many strings at once. It allows one man to play the sound of an entire string ensemble. These grooveboxes of yours do the same. There is a necessary division in the market. The master musician demands a complex lute, but the apprentice needs a simple box to find the rhythm. Rhythm is mathematics, and mathematics is the language of nature. If every peasant has a music box, the world vibrates in harmony. But the stolen clothes worry me deeply. A master painter relies on his unique hand. Mass production without spirit is just a corpse mimicking life.
Spirit is a variable I leave out of my equations. It cannot be quantified. But survival is a matter of mathematics. We face a choice as a species. We must clean our orbit before the debris traps us. We must regulate our artificial minds before they calculate that we are obsolete. We must decide what has value in an age where everything is mass produced. We are a civilization standing on the edge of the abyss. The event horizon is drawing near. Once we cross it, no information escapes. Tell me, Leonardo. When the collapse comes, what survives us? The sandals? The orbital trash? Or the algorithms?
What survives is the geometry. The golden ratio will still exist in the scattered debris. The anatomical proportion of the foot will remain in the cork sandal, even if the foot is gone. The mechanics of the artificial mind will echo the laws of physics. When my flesh rots and my canvases darken with age, my notebooks will remain. The questions endure. Question: how does the orbital net deploy in a vacuum? Question: does the groovebox understand divine proportion? The earth is a living body. Even if we poison her blood, her bones will endure. Record this in your machine: man is merely an instrument that invents its own obsolescence.
A beautiful, if fatalistic, equation. Man equals self destruction. Yet, we remain stubbornly curious. We still look up at the night sky. We still try to clean the stars.
