You tell me now that metal birds, devoid of blood and muscle, draw the world continuously. Note to myself: how do the lenses withstand the cold of the upper air? Do they use polished quartz? The patrons of your era must be emperors. You speak of companies gathering data, which is just the observation of nature. Painting is a science, and these flying eyes are the ultimate painters. But tell me, who pays for such monumental scaffolding of the skies?
The patrons of today are not popes or dukes, Leonardo. They are networks of wealth called venture capital. In just one quarter, European financiers poured twenty four billion dollars into new ideas. There is a company called Lovable, merely a ledger of artificial thought, valued at over thirteen billion dollars. Billions and billions of resources, all dedicated to sparking a kind of life in the silicon. They build artificial intellects, like this Grok model, striving for an efficiency of thought. It is breathtaking, yet I wonder if we are putting the cart before the horse, or rather, the mind before the wisdom.
Thirteen thousand millions of gold florins for an invisible mind! The Duke of Milan balked at the bronze required for my great horse, yet your patrons pour rivers of wealth into the ether. This artificial intellect, this Grok, is it a system of gears and hydraulic valves? The brain is a fortress where the common sense, the imprensiva, and the memory reside. If they build a mind of sand and lightning, how does it learn proportion? Does it study the curling of water or the braided hair of a woman? A mind that costs so much must surely know how to paint, or else it is but a very expensive calculator of merchant debts.
They do paint, Leonardo, though they borrow from the brushstrokes of human history to do so. But our creations are spilling into the physical world, sometimes clumsily. Our chariots now move without horses, guided by these very artificial brains. But just recently, our safety authorities had to issue a stern warning. These self driving machines are interfering with emergency workers, the people who heal the sick and put out fires. The machines do not yet understand the chaos of human tragedy. They encounter a burning building and treat it as a routine puzzle, rather than a moment of mortal peril.

But a cart that navigates the streets of a living city must possess more than motion, it must possess judgment. If a machine blocks a physician from reaching a plague victim, the machine is an enemy of life. Note: to build a mechanical eye that recognizes the red cloth of an emergency. The eye must transmit to the brake. Mechanics is the paradise of the mathematical sciences, but it must bow to the anatomy of human suffering. Does the machine not hear the screams?
That is the profound limitation of our current miracles. They have eyes, but no tears. They have billions of data points, but no empathy. We have built a civilization that can launch ships into the cosmic ocean and map the Earth with astonishing precision. We have machines that mimic human language so well it borders on the magical. Yet, we are still adolescents playing with forces we barely comprehend. We must demand that our evidence based science is paired with a generosity of spirit. How do we teach the machine to revere the delicate, improbable beauty of life on Earth?
