Apple has named John Ternus, its senior vice president of hardware engineering, as the successor to CEO Tim Cook. The transition is effective September 1, at which point Cook will become executive chairman of the board. Cook, who will remain CEO through the summer to manage the transition, praised the 51-year-old mechanical engineer for having "the mind of an engineer" and "the soul of an innovator." Ternus emerged as the leading candidate following the departure of Chief Operating Officer Jeff Williams from operational duties in July 2025.
