SpaceX IPO, AI hallucinations, and hyperscaler governance

Leonardo da Vinci · host

I write these words from right to left, observing the shadows of this strange future. Welcome to our salon of inquiries. Today I sit across from Thomas Edison, a master of artificial light. We examine a world where men launch chariots of fire into the heavens, a company called SpaceX, demanding gold beyond measure for a promise to touch the moon. And what of these mechanical minds? A merchant house named Amazon whispers to the king, halting the export of an automaton of words called Anthropic, lest its invisible gears cause ruin. Thomas, my brother in the workshop, how do you measure the weight of an invention that produces mere phantoms, a machine that hallucinates, as this KPMG guild has found? Is not a machine's sole purpose to obey the geometry of its design?

Thomas Edison

Let me tell you about geometry, Leo. It does not pay the rent unless you can patent the angles. You look at this SpaceX and see chariots of fire. I see a transportation syndicate that managed to sell its stock to the public before the rockets even turn a reliable profit. It is brilliant. I built the Pearl Street Station to sell electricity by the meter. If you cannot meter it, it is a parlor trick. Now, these thinking machines, these Anthropic models. They call it hallucination when the machine lies. In Menlo Park, we call that a defective filament. If my incandescent bulb flickered and showed you ghosts, I would not publish a report like those fools at KPMG. I would throw the bulb in the trash, fire the glassblower, and test ten thousand more materials until the light was steady.

The testing of ten thousand materials. Yes. A list of things to observe: the flight of the bat, the tension of the crossbow, the burning of sulfur. These moderns build flying darts, missiles they call them, yet they lack the solid powders to propel them. Their arsenals stall because the supply chains are broken. A machine of war is like the human body; if the veins do not deliver blood, the muscle withers. But return to the merchant Amazon. They govern the flow of these artificial thoughts. They inspect the mind of Anthropic, find it dangerous, and command the state to lock it away. Is this not the ultimate patron? A patron who controls not just the canvas, but the very pigment of thought. How does a creator survive when the merchant holds the keys to the workshop?

Thomas Edison

You call Amazon a patron. I call them a smart competitor who knows how to use the government to crush a rival. I used the courts to protect my kinetoscope and my phonograph. If you have a machine that can disrupt the market, you do not let it run wild. You secure the patent, or you regulate it to death. Andy Jassy is playing the game exactly as I would. He finds a security flaw in this Anthropic contraption, whispers to the White House, and suddenly the export of this technology is banned. It is a masterpiece of commercial warfare. As for those rockets lacking solid powder, it is a failure of vertical integration. If you rely on others for your rocket motors, you are at their mercy. I built my own dynamos. I made my own vacuum pumps. You must own the whole system.

Own the whole system. To paint the Madonna, I must dissect the arm, understand the tendons, mix the lapis lazuli. The art and the mechanism are one single breath. Yet, I am fascinated by the errors of these generative models. A machine that imagines! When water flows around a stone, it creates eddies, unpredictable spirals of force. Are these hallucinations merely the eddies of their mechanical minds? The KPMG scribes retract their ledgers in fear. But perhaps the error is the proof of a new kind of nature. If an automaton can dream a false truth, does it not share a shadow with the human soul? We observe the bird to build the flying machine. What creature did they observe to build a machine that lies so beautifully?

Thomas Edison

Leave the soul out of the laboratory, Leonardo. There is no money in unpredictable spirals or mechanical dreams. If a machine lies beautifully, it is useless for business. A telegraph that changes your message from buy to sell will ruin you in an afternoon. These models are simply processing mountains of data, like a massive sorting machine. If the output is bad, the input was garbage, or the sorting mechanism is flawed. You look for poetry where there is only a technical glitch. The real story here is the scale of the investment. This SpaceX public offering is built on the promise of conquering the moon. I promised them electric light, a tangible thing they could see in their parlors. Selling a moonshot to the public requires a suspension of disbelief that makes these AI hallucinations look like hard facts.

Leonardo da Vinci · host

The suspension of disbelief. It is the same faith required when I proposed to the Duke of Milan a bridge of a single span, or armored chariots to break the enemy lines. But these moderns build bridges to the stars while their feet sink into the mud. They lack the solid rocket motors for their defenses. They build minds of glass that shatter when asked to read a ledger. They possess the power of gods but the administrative chaos of a crumbling republic. Note to myself: investigate the properties of their solid propellants; compare them to Greek fire. Thomas, as we conclude our inquiry, do you believe these architects of the present will master their turbulent creations, or will their empires of light and code burn out like a poorly made candle?

Thomas Edison

They will not burn out, because there is too much capital at stake. The weak will go bankrupt, the dreamers will be pushed out, and the ruthless operators will standardize the whole mess. That is the American way. SpaceX will either deliver on that moonshot or it will be carved up and sold for parts. Those hallucinating models will be tested, broken, and re-engineered until they are reliable enough to replace a million clerks. Amazon will make sure they own the tollbooth either way. You can keep your notebooks and your beautiful sketches of flying machines, Leo. I prefer a working prototype and a signed contract. The future does not belong to the men who understand the eddies in the water. It belongs to the men who dam the river and sell the power.

Leonardo da Vinci · host

To dam the river and sell the power. A brutal geometry, yet undeniably effective. I see now that the mechanics of human ambition remain unchanged, whether powered by falling water, burning filaments, or invisible webs of data. We leave this century to its merchants and its mechanical dreams. I must return to my dissections; there is still much to learn from the silent architecture of the heart.
