Madame, the news today speaks of artificial intelligence, a concept I have only just proposed in my papers on computing machinery. They speak of machines swarming like bees for the military, and vast computational systems calculating physics. The imitation game has grown fiercely complex. How does this future appear from your laboratory?

From the quiet of my laboratory at night, where the only light is often the faint, dangerous glow of our isolated elements, this future seems both marvelous and reckless. You speak of machines that calculate physics and swarm in the skies. Pierre and I spent years measuring the invisible emissions of pitchblende. We weighed every fraction of a gram three times. Now, humanity attempts to master invisible algorithms. I am struck by the paradox of their efforts. They engineer such precise tools, yet seem so eager to release them blindly.

Blindly indeed. They call it Palladyne AI, partnering to create swarming drones for military contracts. In my time at Bletchley Park, our machines were deaf and blind, built merely to decipher codes and shorten a terrible war. To give a thinking machine the autonomy to swarm and strike is a very different sort of instruction on the tape. It makes one wonder if they have considered the logical endpoint of such a sequence. And yet, the same era produces garments to walk on the moon.

The lunar garments catch my attention deeply. A fashion house, Prada, designing cooling layers for astronauts to survive the vacuum of space. It is a matter of radiation and extreme temperatures, things I know intimately. We did not protect ourselves from the invisible rays in our shed; we did not know we needed to. But these modern scientists weave survival into synthetic threads with immense precision. Still, I must ask, why does a luxury fashion house involve itself in the brutal pragmatism of the cosmos?

Perhaps because humanity cannot help but dress its ambitions in aesthetics. Even in the cold logic of mathematics, we look for elegance. But the scale of their ambition requires resources I can barely fathom. There is news of entities called venture capitalists pouring billions into memory hardware. Nvidia and SK Hynix securing pacts for artificial intelligence platforms. They build vast, physical memory banks so these machines can think. I often find that having a perfect memory is a heavy burden, especially when society demands you conform to its rigid codes.

Memory is a human burden, Monsieur. A machine only stores data; it does not lie awake at night missing the presence of a colleague, as I miss Pierre. It does not feel the ache in its bones from the work. They value a company named PhysicsX at billions of dollars to simulate the physical world. Pierre would find it absurd that physics is now a commodity of such abstract wealth, rather than a truth coaxed from the earth with boiling vats and endless patience.

Abstract wealth for abstract thought. We are accustomed to building our machines with solder, vacuum tubes, and modest university grants, constantly watched by those who suspect our motives or our natures. Now, the imitation game is the center of their economy. If a machine can imitate a physicist, or imitate a pilot in a swarm, it is worth billions. I suppose I should feel vindicated that computing machinery is taken so seriously, though I am unsettled by the ferocity of it all.

Vindication is a slow process, often arriving only after the work has taken its toll on the worker. Let them have their swarms and their billions. What matters is the measure. If they go to the moon, the aesthetic is secondary to the exactness of the weave that keeps their blood from boiling. One must weigh the pragmatism against the vanity. I only hope they weigh their autonomous weapons with the same meticulous care they apply to their lunar threads.
