The Paris Prosecutor’s Office has summoned Elon Musk for a voluntary hearing, marking a significant escalation in the French judiciary’s scrutiny of the social media platform X. The request, known as an *audition libre*, also extends to former CEO Linda Yaccarino and several other employees. While the procedure allows Musk to remain silent and depart at will, any statements made are officially recorded and could carry weight in an investigation that is moving forward regardless of his attendance.
The inquiry, which began in early 2025, originally targeted the platform’s recommendation algorithms and their potential for manipulation. However, the scope of the case has broadened considerably over the last year. By November 2025, the cybercrime division of the French police began investigating potential complicity in the possession and distribution of illicit material, including deepfakes and images involving the abuse of minors.
This move reflects a growing appetite among European regulators to hold individual executives accountable for the systemic failures of their platforms. For X, which has significantly downsized its moderation teams under Musk’s ownership, the summons represents a collision between the company’s "free speech" absolutism and the rigid requirements of European digital safety laws. The outcome may set a precedent for how much personal legal risk a tech billionaire must shoulder for the automated outputs of his own empire.
