Philanthropist Connie Ballmer has donated $80 million to NPR, the largest gift from a living donor in the organization’s history. The funding arrives after the Trump administration pressured Congress to cut $1.1 billion from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting. Ballmer, citing the importance of fact-based and local journalism, stated that an informed public is essential to democracy.
Alongside an anonymous $33 million gift for local stations, NPR CEO Katherine Maher said the support will help stabilize the network for the next 50 years.
