EDGE Group, the United Arab Emirates’ state-owned defense conglomerate, is establishing a new office in Paris as it looks to expand its commercial footprint across the continent. In an interview with Breaking Defense, CEO Hamad Al Marar described Europe as the company's "next large market," signaling a strategic pivot toward Western buyers. The push comes as the firm reports heightened interest in its military technology, which Al Marar attributes to the company's operational role in defending the UAE against recent Iranian attacks. The move underscores a broader effort by Gulf states to transition from defense importers to global arms exporters.

Leveraging operational history for export growth

The decision to anchor its European operations in Paris places EDGE Group in the center of a continent currently undergoing a historic rearmament cycle. While European nations have traditionally relied on domestic champions or established American contractors for their defense procurement, the urgency of modernizing stockpiles has created openings for newer entrants. By highlighting its recent combat-tested experience in the Middle East, EDGE is attempting to position its portfolio as a viable alternative for European militaries seeking proven capabilities.

The expansion also reflects the maturation of the UAE’s domestic defense sector. EDGE Group was formed to consolidate the Emirates' fragmented defense industry into a single entity capable of competing on the global stage. Using its reported success in intercepting regional threats as a credential, the conglomerate is now testing whether its technology can meet the rigorous procurement standards of European defense ministries.

Whether EDGE can secure significant contracts in a highly protected European defense market remains to be seen. As the company builds out its Paris presence, the focus will shift to how European governments balance the need for rapid capability acquisition against the political preference for domestic defense industrial bases.
