In an era of hyper-connectivity and fleeting digital interactions, the act of preserving the mundane is becoming a deliberate design choice. StoryCorps, the non-profit dedicated to recording the oral history of Americans, has announced an unexpected partnership with the pasta sauce brand Prego. The result is the "Connection Keeper Bundle," a $20 kit launching April 27 that centers on a recording device modeled after a jar lid.
The device is notable for what it lacks. Eschewing the modern standards of WiFi, Bluetooth, and artificial intelligence, the Connection Keeper is a strictly analog-adjacent tool. It features a single recording button and a USB-C port for manual uploads. By removing the distractions of screens and the complexities of the cloud, the project seeks to lower the barrier to entry for family storytelling, positioning the dinner table as a site of historical record.
Beyond the recording hardware, the bundle includes conversation prompt cards designed to spark dialogue across generations. While the partnership might appear as a curious marketing maneuver, it aligns with StoryCorps’ broader mission to archive the voices of everyday citizens within the Library of Congress. In a landscape saturated by algorithmic curation, there is a quiet utility in a device that simply listens to the people sitting right in front of it.
