For years, David Lynch’s daily weather reports on YouTube served as a strange, steadying ritual—a nasal, Midwestern broadcast of Los Angeles skies that felt both mundane and deeply deliberate. In a new soundtrack mix for MUBI Notebook, these reports become a gateway into the "Lynchian" uncanny. The mix opens with a dispatch from March 25, a date that aligned with the author’s own writing process years later, creating what they describe as a "tunnel between time" that connects Lynch’s past with our present.

This sense of temporal displacement was recently amplified by an exhibition of Lynch’s work at the Pace Gallery in Berlin. There, under the red glow of a large colored glass window, the atmosphere of the filmmaker’s early experimental shorts, such as *The Alphabet* (1969), felt less like a historical artifact and more like a living environment. The exhibition showcased the tactile, often overlooked mediums Lynch inhabited—painting, sculpture, and sound—reminding us that his vision was never confined to the cinema screen.

The mix itself functions as a sonic survey of these mental spaces. By blending Lynch’s voice with the industrial hums and dream-pop textures of his filmography, it captures the specific frequency he tuned into: a world where the weather in Berlin can suddenly mirror a spring day in Los Angeles from four years prior. It is a reminder that Lynch’s work remains a shared subconscious, a place where we are lucky to float through the darkness together.
