Anthropic has begun requiring government-issued photo IDs and selfies from certain customers, a move designed to block access in countries designated as American adversaries, including China, Russia, and North Korea. While Chinese tech firms and startups have previously bypassed restrictions to use the company’s AI, this new policy aims to close those loopholes.
One Beijing-based founder reported that access to Claude Code was terminated shortly after the policy announcement. Although OpenAI maintains similar regional prohibitions, it does not currently require ID verification.
