The integration of artificial intelligence into the software development lifecycle has moved from experimental to mandatory. From Silicon Valley giants like Google and OpenAI to a fleet of specialized startups, the promise is uniform: AI coding agents will dissolve the friction of syntax and boilerplate, allowing engineers to focus on higher-order problem-solving. However, this rapid adoption has birthed a new orthodoxy centered on usage—how many seats are active and how many lines of code are being generated—rather than the actual value of the output.
For VPs of Engineering, this focus on activity creates a seductive but dangerous illusion of progress. Measuring "lines of code" has long been a discredited metric in software engineering, yet the AI era has resurrected it under the guise of efficiency. When providers showcase high adoption rates, they often obscure a fundamental lack of clarity regarding whether these tools are accelerating product delivery or merely inflating the codebase.
The question that AI providers are least eager to answer concerns the long-term health of the systems being built. If an AI agent generates a thousand lines of code in seconds, but that code requires extensive debugging or introduces subtle architectural flaws, the net gain is negative. Without a shift toward measuring outcomes—such as feature velocity or reduced technical debt—organizations risk spending millions on tools that produce more noise than signal.
