The friction between Elon Musk’s vision for X and European regulatory standards has reached a new legal flashpoint. French judicial authorities have summoned Musk and the platform’s former CEO, Linda Yaccarino, to testify in an ongoing investigation into the social network’s operations. The inquiry focuses on the platform’s algorithmic influence over domestic political discourse and the specific outputs of its generative AI tool, Grok.

The allegations against X are multifaceted and severe. Prosecutors are examining claims that the GrokAI chatbot has disseminated content denying the Holocaust and facilitated the creation of sexually explicit deepfakes, including material involving minors. Beyond these specific outputs, the investigation seeks to determine if X’s core algorithms have been tuned to unfairly sway political opinion among French users, a charge that strikes at the heart of the platform’s role in the public square.

This summons follows a period of escalating tension. In February, French prosecutors, supported by Interpol, executed a search and seizure operation at X’s Paris headquarters. The company has consistently denied any wrongdoing, characterizing the legal scrutiny as a politically motivated misuse of the judicial system. However, as the European Union tightens its grip on digital platforms through the Digital Services Act, this case serves as a critical test of how much sovereignty a private platform can maintain over its moderation and algorithmic logic.
