The European geopolitical landscape faces a new tension spearheaded by Madrid. Spanish President Pedro Sánchez has formalized his intention to formally propose to the European Union the termination of its association agreement with Israel. The measure, to be presented in Brussels during the meeting of foreign ministers, marks a significant escalation in the bloc's diplomatic pressure against military actions in Gaza.

The Spanish justification is predicated on the systematic non-compliance with the human rights clauses stipulated in the treaty. According to Sánchez, the conduct of Benjamin Netanyahu's government has exceeded the ethical and legal boundaries established for the maintenance of the political and economic cooperation that defines the relationship between the 27 member states and the State of Israel.

While the proposal resonates with nations such as Ireland, the path to consensus in Brussels remains arduous. The termination of agreements of this magnitude necessitates complex coordination and encounters historical resistance from countries more aligned with Israel. Madrid's initiative, however, signals a growing fissure in European foreign policy and tests the bloc's capacity to act cohesively in the face of global humanitarian crises.
