The ongoing collaboration between Copenhagen-based designer Cecilie Bahnsen and ASICS has become a bellwether for a specific shift in contemporary footwear: the "prettification" of technical utility. Their latest iteration, a reworked GEL-QUANTUM 360, strips away the traditional architecture of the rugged "dad shoe" in favor of something more ethereal. It is a continuation of a partnership that, since 2022, has helped define the "girlcore" movement—a subculture that leans into hyper-feminine motifs without sacrificing structural integrity.
This new model arrives as a laceless slip-on, replacing the standard upper with stretchy neoprene adorned with Bahnsen’s signature floral cutouts. While the original cushioned soles remain intact for performance, the exterior is softened by these intricate motifs, effectively turning a piece of high-traction gear into a delicate slipper. Available in monochrome pink and black colorways, the design leans into a tactile, almost artisanal aesthetic that contrasts sharply with the mass-market rigidity of typical athletic footwear.
The collaboration marks a maturation of Bahnsen’s influence on the sneaker market. Having previously reimagined the GT-2160 as a ballet-inspired silhouette, the designer’s ability to "soften" utilitarian staples—as seen in her previous work with The North Face—is now firmly established. At $264, the GEL-QUANTUM 360 serves as both a functional object and a romantic statement, illustrating how high-fashion whimsy can coexist with the technical demands of the modern street.
